Who would have ever thought we would be here. Right now. Dealing with this. Like many of you, I had plans. Events, vacations, projects and meetings scheduled months and years in advance. All delayed. Some now at a standstill. What do we do now?
For those of you who like to forecast, direct and “know”, this moment of “ the unknown”, the “global pandemic” is terrifying. Some are paralyzed in fear and drowning in anxiety. No one has the answers – no one really knows why and how or when this will be over.
For now, I hold dearly to 4 fundamentals that have helped anchor me back to the basics and move forward during uncertain times.
The International Day of Happiness was last month, and most of our stress relievers, the things do to bring us happiness, have been taken away. We can’t go to the movies, the gym, the game or the concert. No happy hour with co-workers or overeating at our favorite restaurant. Our children can’t get to the mall, parties or sleepovers with friends. We are confined. Restricted to a limited number of places and a limited number of people.
We will have to be intentional and strategic about discovering new ways to stay “full” and at peace.
Channel the element of SPACE. Create it for yourself and for others. Create space to experience moments of joy and inspire others to do the same. This is essential to our health and our well being.
We are accustomed to going, flying, meeting and doing. Our life’s momentum, and the actions required to maintain it often disrupt, interrupt and can ultimately sever our connection with those we love the most. This time of intimacy is a gift. We have a captive audience. Yours may be family members or it may be just yourself. Either way, it is time to reconnect.
Channel the element of EARTH to strengthen your roots, water your soil and grow the connection you have with yourself and others.
Up to 60% of the human adult body is water. According to H.H. Mitchell, Journal of Biological Chemistry, the brain and heart are composed of 73% water. Lungs are about 83% water. The skin contains 64% water, muscles and kidneys are 79% water, and even your bones are watery, containing 31%. I always think of it’s most potent property – the ability to reflect.
An old proverb I adore reads, “As water reflects the face, so the heart reflects. As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person”
Driving speedily on a straight path we are seeing a yellow hazard sign notifying us of a curve ahead that might just tip us over. We are being forced to slow down. Embrace this moment as an opportunity to pause and seek the truth. Reflect on what has been, what is and what you desire the future to be. Invest time to strategize, plan and prepare so that when the path straightens you can ensure you are on the right one.
Observe the WATER element in play. What is your water reflecting?
Make no mistake. This is a season. A valley. As long as we keep moving this too shall pass. We don’t know when and we don’t know-how. But one truth remains – we are not alone. We are connected-enduring this together. Confidently press forward knowing that there will be life after this.
Notice the element of FIRE refining you. Our life is requiring adjustments, new schedules, approaches to stress and building unity. Adapt, remain flexible and remain laser-focused on solutions.
It is my hope that we emerge from this a little more centered, self-aware and committed to genuine connection. There are some things that can not be taken away from us. And those are the things that really matter.
Move forward friends because there is always a way 🙂
